Art in the Center
Along with exceptional meeting space and an endless array of recreational and leisure activities, Monterey is a flourishing arts community. The Conference Center features impressive
permanent and rotating collections. Sculptures, paintings and tapestries from contemporary
local artists adorn our walls and public spaces.
Upon entering the Conference Center, you are greeted by "Two Dolphins" (picture
at right), a nine-foot-tall sculpture composed of thousands of pieces of inlaid wood. The
work, created by Big Sur artist Emile Norman, depicts two dolphins in "flight"
as they dance across the sea.
Rising to the second floor, the Alvarado Gallery presents an ever-changing
array of art from Peninsula artists. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through
Friday.
Monterey provides opportunities for artists to exhibit their work in a
series of rotating art shows at the Alvarado Gallery in the Conference
Center. The Gallery provides a forum for citizens of Monterey, and visitors
to Monterey, to celebrate the rich artistic and cultural heritage of the
area. The selected exhibitions highlight the quality and diversity of arts
and cultural expression in the Monterey area in order to inform, educate and
delight residents and Conference Center visitors.
